50-State License Plate Sets: A Guide to Collecting, Crafts, and Gifts

Posted by Rustic Plates on

A 50-state license plate set includes one authentic plate from every US state, gathered into a ready made collection. It is a convenient way to start collecting, decorate a wall, or source plates for a handmade United States map. This guide explains what comes in a set and how to choose the condition, age, and style that suit your plans.

A sample 50-state set with Washington DC. Designs and plate numbers vary from set to set.

What is in a 50 state set

A standard set contains fifty authentic, expired license plates, one from each US state. Every plate is genuine and government-issued, never a reproduction. We also offer versions with additional plates from Washington DC, American Samoa, and the US Virgin Islands.

Standard sets mix years and designs. They are not a matching-year collection or a guarantee of the latest design from every state. Our inventory changes, so the colors, years, designs, and plate numbers you receive may differ from the sample photo. Use the photo and listing description as a guide to the condition and type of set.

What condition should you choose

We offer three main condition categories. The best choice depends on how much wear you like and what you plan to do with the plates. Read the individual listing and review its sample photos before ordering.

Roadkill

These plates have heavy wear, bends, rust, or damage. They are an option for projects that call for a rough, weathered appearance. Choose this grade when substantial wear is part of the look you want.

Craft and Worn

These plates show wear from years on the road, which may include scratches, fading, bends, or rust. These are by far the most popular choice, offering an affordable option for maps and other craft projects, and can also work well for wall displays where a used, rustic appearance is welcome.

Good Condition

These are really nice condition plates.

Vintage and embossed set options

Condition is only one part of the choice. We also offer vintage sets with plates that are at least twenty years old, and an embossed-only set featuring raised characters. Vintage describes age; embossed describes how the characters are formed. Neither term alone tells you the condition, so check the grade in the listing.

If you enjoy selecting each plate yourself, you can also build a collection from individual plates. That gives you more control over the years, designs, and condition of each state.

What people do with a 50 state set

Finished handmade United States map built from authentic license plates, one state per plate

A finished handmade license plate map. Plan your layout and material needs before cutting.

A United States map

A set provides plates from every state for a map project. Common, worn plates are an affordable choice for cutting into state shapes and mounting on a backing. Before ordering or cutting, choose your map size and templates and work out how much material each state will need. Depending on the layout and scale, you may need additional plates, especially for larger states. The set supplies the plates; tools, templates, and backing are separate.

A gallery wall

Hang all fifty in a grid or a loose collage in a home, garage, or bar. Choose Good Condition for a cleaner display, Craft/Worn for a used appearance, or Roadkill when you want heavy weathering.

A complete collection

A set lets you start with every state represented. You can display it as it arrives or replace individual plates over time with favorite designs, older examples, or plates from places you have visited.

A gift

A complete set can make a thoughtful gift for a collector, crafter, or road-trip enthusiast. Match the grade to the recipient: cleaner plates for a collection or display, and worn plates for someone who enjoys rustic decor or craft projects.

Adding DC and territory plates

If you want to go beyond the fifty states, we offer sets that include Washington DC, American Samoa, the US Virgin Islands, or a combination of those additions. These expand the collection without representing every US territory. Check the listing for the exact locations and total number of plates included. If you are looking for a specific addition, just ask.

How to choose the right set

Start with the intended use. For cutting and craft projects, consider Craft/Worn or Roadkill according to the amount of wear you want. For a cleaner display or collection, choose Good Condition. Then decide whether vintage plates or raised characters matter to you, and whether you want DC or territory plates included.

Finally, review the listing and sample photos. They show the type and condition of set to expect, while the actual designs and plate numbers vary.

Frequently asked questions

How many plates are in a 50 state set

A standard set has fifty plates, one from each US state. Versions with DC or territory plates include additional plates; the listing specifies the total.

Will I receive the exact plates in the photo

The photos show a typical set. Years, designs, colors, and plate numbers may differ as our inventory changes. The sample photos and description help you judge the condition.

Can I make a map from a 50 state set

Yes. A set provides plates from all fifty states, but your chosen size and cutting layout determine whether you need extra material. Plan the project before cutting, or browse our finished handmade maps.

Which set is best for a collector

A Good Condition set is a useful starting point for a cleaner collection. Consider a vintage set if age matters to you, or an embossed-only set if you prefer raised characters. Read the listing for the condition and features included.
