How to Buy License Plates (Collector’s Guide)
Buying license plates can be simple, fun, and rewarding—if you know what to look for. Whether you’re a seasoned collector or just getting started, this guide will help you buy confidently and avoid common pitfalls.
1. Decide Why You’re Buying
License plates are collected for many reasons, and knowing your goal helps narrow your search.
Common reasons people buy license plates include:
-
Collecting by state, year, or region
-
Birth-year or anniversary plates
-
Automotive or transportation history
-
Décor, art, or design projects
-
Year-of-Manufacture (YOM) registration (where allowed)
2. Understand Authentic vs. Reproduction Plates
Authentic plates are original, government-issued plates that were once registered or produced for official use. Reproductions are modern copies—sometimes made for décor, and at worst, intended to deceive collectors.
What to look for in authentic plates:
-
Original embossing and stamping
-
Period-correct paint, fonts, and materials
-
Natural wear, patina, or aging (which varies by condition)
That said, even these indicators aren’t foolproof—especially with higher-value plates. We’ve seen convincing fakes that replicate correct embossing, paints, fonts, and even artificially added wear to mimic aging.

3. Learn How Condition Affects Value
Condition does matter—especially when it comes to value—but it isn’t everything. Most importantly, collect what you love.
It’s also helpful to be realistic. An extremely rare plate, with very few known examples, can still be an incredible piece even in poor condition. Rarity can outweigh wear.
4. Buying Year-of-Manufacture (YOM) Plates
Some states allow vintage license plates to be registered on classic vehicles.
Before buying, be sure to:
-
Confirm your state’s YOM rules
-
Verify the correct year and plate type for your vehicle
-
Check whether the serial number must be clear
Always consult your local DMV or DOL before purchasing plates intended for registration.
5. Buy From Reputable Sellers
A good seller should:
-
Sell only authentic plates
-
Describe condition honestly and clearly
-
Follow established industry standards
-
Be available to answer questions
If something feels unclear, ask. Reputable sellers welcome informed buyers.
