Precut Letters
Precut license plate letters and numbers are individually cut from authentic license plates. Popular projects include personalized name signs, anniversary and wedding dates, addresses, and business signs. We mix states and colors for variety. Need whole plates for bigger projects like license plate maps or stars? Browse our bulk license plates or individual plates and pairs. We cut letters from our own inventory, so they ship fast and our inventory changes daily.
Over the years many states have shifted to making flat plates. Many others still make embossed plates. You can choose from a mix of flat and embossed plates or go with just embossed. We also sort by good condition and craft/worn condition.
For professional sign builders or those that make a lot of signs, we have bulk listings where each letter or number you choose includes 25 pieces.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are these made from real license plates?
Absolutely! Every letter and number is cut from an authentic, expired license plate. We never use replica or fake plates. Unless otherwise noted, we use aluminum license plates because they're much easier to cut cleanly and work well for signs, crafts, and other projects.
What's the difference between embossed and flat letters and numbers?
Embossed letters are raised from the surface of the license plate. (Vermont is a unique exception, the letters are recessed, making the background appear raised.) Flat plates have characters that are printed directly onto the plate without raised lettering. As many states have transitioned to flat plates in recent years, we offer both embossed-only options as well as a mix of flat and embossed letters.
Can I pick the states for each letter or number?
Usually not, but you're always welcome to leave a note with your order and we'll do our best if we have them.
There are a number of reasons we can't guarantee specific states. Some states don't use certain letters or numbers, others only use flat plates, and for a few states we primarily have older steel plates that don't cut well. Some license plates are also simply too collectible or historically significant to cut apart, so we preserve them intact.
For those reasons, we generally create a random mix. We do, however, make every effort to include a variety of states, colors, and designs in each order.
Can I pick the colors?
Usually not, for many of the same reasons we can't guarantee specific states. That said, we make every effort to create a colorful mix. Unless it's a very large order, we also try to avoid repeating the same plate designs so every project has plenty of variety.
